of the building's bricks. >> i have a brick from st. joe's church, which i'm going to cherish the rest of my life. >> reporter: and the marble altar, wednesday's tornado left both of them untouched. >> reporter: cold, rocky mountain air, colliding with warm, wet, midwestern weather, spawned at least 27 tornadoes wednesday. >> they stretch from kansas to tennessee and in a period of over 24 hours, killed people and injured hundreds. the largest of ef4 leveled this. it wrecked parts of the town. but there were no fatalities. residents credit the 35-minute warning from a new radar technology, called dual polarization. it sends out both vertical and horizontal pulses. >> with dual polarization, we're going to know that that's the debris. >> 44 are in place nationwide. and 160 will be by year's end.

residents hope they won't need another warning. more bad weather is expected friday. in ridgway, terrell brown, weenl eyewitness news. >> and today is the traditional start of the tornado season. but we have already had more than 127 tornadoes in 2012. that is more than double the usual number. >> not much to hate about the weather in our area. wjz was outside in the university of baltimore law school today in mount royal. and we found dozens outside eating lunch or just catching up with friends. right now, it's warm and sunny. a beautiful way to start the month on march 1st. meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> hello. good afternoon, everyone. the reason for many of those tornadoes, the contrast in the air. we can't argue that it's been so warm and mild here in the mid-atlantic that we are experiencing the positive side of that temperature change. right now, we're at 65 degrees. temperatures will fluctuate now.

34% relative humidity. 15-mile-per-hour wind from the west. and we are watching the temperatures now just around 15 degrees or so. warmer today than this time yesterday. a little cooler out in oakland. about the same down on the shore. about 6 degrees warmer down in ocean city. and we do have more wet weather coming our way. we do have rain approaching that is going to get here potentially late tomorrow night. but in the meantime, we still have dry air sweeping right on through the mid-atlantic. and it's going to be a nice day, for the most part on your friday. we'll have your complete updated first warning forecast coming up. chardon high school reopens today for the first time since monday's shooting left three students dead and two wounded. vic is in the newsroom with more on a symbolic show of unity. >> well, mary, the group gathered in chardon square today. showed the tragedy could not keep the small, tight-knit community from moving forward. tearful students gathered at the gazebo. they walked hand in hand back to the ohio school for the first time.

some quietly saying the school's alma mater during the one-mile walk. some of the victims' parents spoke to the crowd. >> demetrius' death was not in vain. demetrius has donated his organs. and for demetrius, he gets to change eight lives. >> but doctors are optimistic for his recovery. he still has no feeling in his legs. he is strong. he's brave. >> minutes ago, the accused shooter, tj lane, was charged with three counts of aggravated murder and assault. >> prosecutors say they still intend to try lane as an adult. horrific charges today. a baltimore jury convicts a 37- year-old man in the brutal death of a local teen. today, jurors have found daunte perish, guilty of murdering 15- year-old jason madison. madison's family watched as prosecutors presented gruesome evidence of how the teen was

suffocated with a pillow and slashed with a razor. he was found stuffed in a closet at his great aunt's home in 2009. in about an hour, with the stroke of the governor's pen, maryland becomes the 8th straight in the -- state in the union to allow same-sex marriages. for proponents of the measure, it's not time to celebrate. >> reporter: the bill's sign suggest historic. but it doesn't necessarily guarantee that same-sex couples will be allowed to marry in maryland. >> reporter: the maryland general assembly takes the giant step toward legalizing same-sex marriage with passing vote negligence both the house and senate. >> congratulations, senator. >> we all did it. this has been a difficult issue for all people. but as one maryland, we came together around the principal of human dignity. and we're moving forward. >> reporter: but there is a potential bump ahead, as

he was behind the investigations that led to resignations of former new york andrew -- anthony weiner. brightbart's website, big journalism.com says he collapsed last night. brightbart's father-in-law, actor orson beam said he suffered from heart problems just last year. mary? >> reporter: all right, thank you. brightbart is survived by his wife and four children. back on dry land, after drifting at sea for three days, the costa alegra cruise ship has continued to port. more than 1,000 passengers and crew are relieved to be home. >> reporter: passengers made their way off the crippled cruise ship on the island nation of sashell. they spent three days at sea, with no running water and no air conditioning. >> the heat is unbearable. so we had to spend most of our nights on the top deck of the ship. >> reporter: the problems began monday when a fire broke out in the costa alegra's engine room. passengers prepared to abandon

ship, while the crew battled the blaze. >> we all went to our life sections. and there was a point where we thought we were going to have to lower the boats. >> reporter: the crew managed to put out the fire. but the ship was stalled. a french fishing boat worked to to the ship for three days, as passengers and crew lived on the deck. food supplies were low. all they had to eat were cold sandwiches. and helicopters dropped in fresh water. >> it's just a matter of inconvenience. not having enough food. not being able to rest well at night. >> reporter: the ship's captain says it's too early to tell what caused the fire. >> because there is always an investigation in progress. >> reporter: this is the second disaster at sea in just over a month. for costa cruise lines, which is owned by florida-based carnival. in january, the costa concordia hit rocks off the coast of italy and sank. 25 people died in the disaster, including seven who are still missing. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news.

>> the cruise line provided buses to take passengers to their deftination of choice. repairs are under way in overly, baltimore county. and it is leaving residents with dry sinks. sky eye chopper 13 over the 7300 block of bel air road. the 12-inch main broke earlier today. repairs are expected to continue through rush hour. areas without water right now are stephanie and loudoun lanes. the water is expected to be turned back on about 6:00 tonight. but we'll keep our eye on it for you. for the latest on road closures in that area and the ride home from work, let's check in with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. if you are traveling in that area, the alternates are going to be either harford road or taylor avenue. right now, we're not seeing any significant delays because of the break. as far as accidents go, that's a different story. we have an accident there, northbound 95 at 195. also northbound on the bw

look at this temperature. down around patuxent river. 71 degrees and patuxent river down in southern maryland. we have 57 in westminster. 61 in bel air. you know, the water temperature has gone up a few degrees over the last few days or so. we're now at just around 46 degrees, as your water temperature. so there's no drastic hit, depending on the difference -- or depending on the direction of the winds, across the land, down around the edge of the water. so even though the waters are cool, temperatures around annapolis, still very cool. we have a west/northwest wind. some of these cool down as they come from the west. and even with this northwest flow, we still have temperatures reflecting a bit of a warmup. and even though our temperatures up around the great lakes and up near the northwest, are really cooler than we are, we're really not seeing a very drastic change. and again, a lot of that is because the air is coming down the mountain and it is not really impacted by the colder temperatures up near the

>> the president's healthcare plan originally called for all employers to cover the cost of birth control. but after hearing objections from lawmakers, he reworked the policy so that insurance companies pick up the costs if employers object. the federal trade commission is looking at a wave of complaints about the popular malt liquor four loko. kai has more on the controversial drink. >> reporter: fda officials are reviewing the alcohol in the brightly-colored supersized can. this first got attention following the hospitalization of college students across the country. some places have banned the drink. critics say the alcohol content is too high and they want four loko to lower it. new labels would have to state exactly how much alcohol is in the drink. denise? >> thank you, kai. a final decision from the ftc on the settlement, whether to approve it or change it, is expected in the next couple of

months. one teenager is dead and another in the hospital, after a stabbing at a chicago high school. police say the attack happened just inside the front door of goldsmith public school. the victims, an 18- and 17-year- old were taken to the hospital, where one of them died. the suspect, a 17-year-old, is in custody. no word yet on a motive. searchers say a fire that hurt seven maryland firefutures was set -- firefighters was set on purpose. jessica kartalija has the latest. >> this cowardly crime is unconscionable to me. >> an angry prince george's county fire chief vows to find the person or persons responsible for sending seven firefighters to the hospital. >> engine 6334, 57th avenue. evacuate the zoning. >> six have been released, including 21-year-old ethan serle, who sustained severe burns to his airways.

he sat front and center wednesday. but 33-year-old kevin o'toole is still in critical but stable condition, with second- and third-degree burns over half of his body. >> o'toole will likely stay in therapy for many weeks. >> his injuries aren't an accident. they were caused by a person or perhaps a group of people, maybe even a serial arsonist. fire officials are already investigating these two arsons. but they're also looking into the possibility that the same party could be responsible for starting other fires in the riverdale neighborhood. >> we have found that if somebody does it once, there's a very high likelihood that it will be done again. >> reporter: it's worrisome for people like felipey, who lives on this same street. >> i'm like kind of concerned about what is happening. but hopefully nothing is going to happen here. >> i want to say to those who are responsible that you can be assured that you will be apprehended. that i will, thereafter, be arrested. and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

up the threat of wildfires. thanks to hurricane irene last year. >> reporter: damage from hurricane irene was hard to miss last august, with homes destroyed. >> all of a sudden, we heard boom. >> reporter: and power knocked out to thousands. >> there's no water, no lights. and everything in the refrigerator and freezer got knocked out. >> reporter: but this was only a fraction. >> there's a lot more fuel available out there in the woods to burn this year than is typical. >> reporter: upping the risk of wildfire in numbers. large fires like this one 10 years ago in dorchester county aren't typical. but this will only get dryer in the months ahead. >> reporter: what makes spring peak fire season is weather like today. >> the sun is coming through the canopies. there are no leaves out. so it warms the forest floor. and it makes it dryer, so the leaves are actually much more susceptible to catching fire. >> reporter: and spreading to all of those dow downed limbs

and trees. sparks from outdoor burning are a real worry. >> that fire gets away from them. and it's out into the woods. and before you know it, you got a wildfire. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> permits are required for outdoor burning, which comes with instructions how to do it safely. march rolls in. the sun and warm temperatures seem to bring everyone outside. wjz found dozens of people in fells point, opting to eat their lunch in the sun. hard to believe that just yesterday, many stayed inside to avoid what were heavy downpours. let's take a live look outside. the sun is shining bright. these warm temperatures are way above normal for the start of the month. and wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers from first washing -- warning weather. these temperatures are normal for the middle and end of april, by the way. we really just jumped ahead by over a month. take a look at radar. it's really been a fantastic day. still in the mid-60s, with low humidity.
